Young, Lovis Brewer-Venable

Those of us with roots in the Travellers Rest Community of Owsley County have lost a dear friend and good neighbor. On the 19th of November in 2009, Lovis Brewer-Venable Young died at the Birchwood Care Center in Hamilton, Ohio. Lovis was born in Travellers Rest on January 11, 1918 to Edna Brewer and Andrew Venable. She was the granddaughter of John C. and Nancy Ann Venable Brewer. When Lovis mother moved to Hamilton in search of work, Lovis stayed in Travellers Rest with her grandparents. The family lived across the road from the Mill Rocks. Her grandpa and W.P. Minter ran a grist mill on Sturgeon Creek and gave this part of that stream its name-“The Mill Rocks”. This was the favorite swimming hole for the young folk growing up in Travellers Rest. Lovis like most of us attended both the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches of Travellers Rest and attended the Travellers Rest School where the renowned Taft Botner was her teacher. In Hamilton, Lovis attended the Horseshoe Bend Baptist Church. On August 22, 1934, Lovis married Joe Young, the son of James and Lulu Herd Young. To that union four daughters were born, Lu Ann, Janet, Mamie, and Rosalee. The first three daughters were born at Travellers Rest and Rosalee was born after the family moved to Hamilton, Ohio. In the early 1950’s, Joe found employment in Hamilton and the family moved from Travellers Rest. Lu Ann who was a senior at Owsley County High School stay with her grandmother Young and graduated before joining her family in Hamilton. Once her children were in school, Lovis worked at various jobs in Hamilton and retired from Wright-Burnett Brush Factory. In her spare time Lovis enjoyed gardening, playing the organ at church, raising pretty flowers, cooking and quilting. Cooking may have been her favorite pastime. One of her daughters once told me that when Mother got upset about something, she would start cooking. Many of us have enjoyed the finished products of her cooking. As a child, I spent many nights with her daughters and remember all the good meals that came from her kitchen. She never missed a Travellers Rest School Reunion and always brought enough food to feed an army. Several of us always looked forward to her green beans and chicken with dumplings at those reunions. Lovis attended her last reunion of that group in September of 2009. Those who attend the Travellers Rest-Owsley County Reunion in Northern Kentucky will miss her cheery disposition and smile at our next gathering. Lovis is survived by her four daughters, nine grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Ethel Minter Venable. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe on the 5 of May 1996, her mother, father, a sister, Beulah and her brother, Ragon Venable. Her funeral was Nov. 24 in Hamilton with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hamilton.
